Midnight Ruse

The moon’s light hits the placid lake below

And refracts up into a gray wolf’s eye.

It blinks and waits. 

The waters will soon vibrate,

But only as the songs from the village begin to fade

And the wind’s heat beats across the winter chill.

Then the deer will trot forward to drink

And a stealthy Spring will fill the air.
